Brush, Seymour J.

SEYMOUR J. BRUSH.—A farmer who is an honor to the calling of agriculture, is Seymour J. Brush, residing in Otter Creek township. He was born May 14, 1868, a son of Samuel Brush, who was born May 26, 1840. The father attended school until eighteen years of age, then learned the carpenters trade in Salem township. He was united in marriage, in 1865, to Viola Morford, daughter of Judson Morford, a farmer. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Brush were as follows: Seymour J.; William, an engineer in Cleveland, Ohio; and Marilla, wife of John E. Granger, a superintendent in the Kansas oil fields.

Seymour J. Brush attended school until fifteen years of age, then left home to learn the machinist's trade at Cleveland, Ohio. When twenty- three years he was foreman for the Brighton Machine Company. He then went with the Robinson Machine Company, of Monongahela City, Pennsylvania, as erecting engineer. When thirty-eight years old he became night foreman for the Pennsylvania Railway roundhouse at Monongahela City, where he continued three years, returning to the farm in 1905 to manage the land owned by his grandfather Alorford, the same consisting of ninety acres, including an orchard of ten acres, which is known as the best in the neighborhood. The name given to this farm is "Pleasant View."

Mr. Brush was married October 26, 1888, at Youngstown, Ohio, to Marion Williams, born March 1, 1867, daughter of Henry Williams, who was killed in 1875, at the Brookfield coal mines in Ohio. Mrs. Brush's mother was Sarah Morgan before marriage; she died in 1887. Both father and mother were natives of South Wales. England. Mr. and Mrs. Brush are the parents of Earl J.; Howard J.; and Margaret Viola.

Mr. Brush and wife are members of the Disciples' church; politically he is a Democrat and has held a position on the county Democratic committee, and is a member of the present school board.
