Dr. Robert J. Grossman. A leading physician and surgeon of Butler, and a public spirited citizen, is Dr. Robert J. Grossman, who has successfully engaged in the practice of his profession in this county since 1886. He was born on a farm in Cherry Township. Butler County, October 25, 1858, and is the son of John and Sarah (McClelland) Grossman.
John Grossman, deceased, was a native of Butler County, and a prosperous farmer of this section. He died in 1902 and his wife, who was born in County Down, Ireland, died in 1874. Mr. and Mrs. Grossman had eight children, as follows: Dr. Robert J., the subject of this sketch ; Mary, married Alex Campbell of Clarion, Pennsylvania ; Margaret J., married James Duffy, lives at Butler; Anna and Ellen, both deceased ; Marie, married David N. McCandless, lives at Grove City, Pennsylvania ; Dr. W. J., a physician, lives at Butler; and Flora I., married George Ray, lives at Queen's Junction, Pennsylvania.
Robert J. Grossman was educated in the primary schools of Cherry and Clay townships, and attended Sunbury Academy. He was employed in the lumber woods of McKean County, Pennsylvania, for several years and in this manner earned enough money to take up the study of medicine. He received his degree as Doctor of Medicine from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in March, 1886, and immediately engaged in practice at Kane, Pennsylvania. After several months he removed to Coaltown, Butler County, where he remained for seven years. Doctor Grossman located in Butler in 1893, where he is well established, with offices at 408 Center Avenue.
On December 28, 1886, Doctor Grossman was united in marriage with Miss Eliza Schryock, of North Washington, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Thomas and Jane (McIlvain) Schryock. They had two children : Lloyd, married Ethel Logan, lives on the Grossman farm in Summit Township, and they have five children, Alberta, Robert L., John LeRoy, Eliza Jane, and Loyal ; and one child of Doctor Grossman died in infancy. Mrs. Grossman died December 30, 1895, and Doctor Grossman was married the second time June 12, 1911, to Miss Agnes R. Redick, of Butler County, the daughter of Col. O. C. and Mrs. Redick. Mrs. Agnes R. Grossman died November 18, 1922. The first Mrs. Grossman was a graduate of the Wooster Medical School of Cleveland, Ohio, and was associated in practice with her husband.
Doctor Grossman is a Democrat, a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World. Professionally he is affiliated with the Butler County Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
