Dunkle, John M. , M. D.

John M. Dunkle, M. D., a well known physician and surgeon of Butler, Pennsylvania, is a native of Pennsylvania. He was born at West Freedom, Clarion County, July 4, 1882, a son of H. C. and Mary L. (Russell) Dunkle.

H. C. Dunkle was born in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, June 28, 1854. His parents were Michael and Caroline (Boyer) Dunkle. The Dunkles and Boyers came from Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Clarion County. They were of German descent. To Michael and Caroline (Boyer) Dunkle the following children were born: (1) Peter, a retired lumber estimator, lives in California; (2) Olive, married Rev. J. W. Nichols, a Methodist minister, both deceased, and are buried near Seattle, Washington; (3) Rev. V. F., a Methodist minister, deceased, and buried near Seattle ; (4) J. W., attorney, was U. S. district attorney at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for many years, where he still lives and is engaged in active practice; (5) Alfred, was for many years a station agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad at Titusville, Pennsylvania, now lives retired near Seattle, Washington; (6) Carrie, the wife of H. C. Miller, lives near Los Angeles; (7) Dr. C. G., physician and surgeon, Pittsburgh; and (8) H. C., father of the subject of this sketch.

H. C. Dunkle received a common school education and engaged in lumbering. He purchased a mill, bought timber lands in large tracts and built boats which were used on the Ohio River carrying coal. He continued in this business until 1901, when he sold out and removed to Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he lived retired until his death, which occurred July 20, 1924. He is buried in North Cemetery, Butler. He was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Church. His wife, Mary L. (Russell) Dunkle, was a daughter of William and Anna (Crozier) Russell, natives of Clarion County, and both now deceased. Mrs. Russell is buried in Clarion County, and her husband in Kansas City, Missouri. To H. C. and Mary L. (Russell) Dunkle six children were born : (1) Bertha, married William T. Hindman, a steam shovel engineer, resides at Worthington, Pennsylvania; (2) Myrtle A., married U. Ryan, superintendent of the Unity Coal Company, Oakmont, Pennsylvania; (3) Dr. John M., the subject of this sketch; (4) Ada, married J. W. Minteer, agriculturist, resides at Worthington, Pennsylvania ; (5) Anna, deceased, buried at West Freedom; and (6) I. C., with the Corona Cord Tire Company, resides in Butler.

Doctor Dunkle was educated in the public schools of Clarion County, took a preparatory course at Sligo, Pennsylvania, and Clarion Normal School. In 1909 he received his degree of Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of the University of Pittsburgh. He served his interneship [sic] at Mercy Hospital, 1909-1910, after which he located at Worthington, Pennsylvania. In 1918 he came to Butler, where he has since been engaged in the practice of his profession.

Doctor Dunkle married, in 1911, Miss Lena Kison, a daughter of H. A. and Sally (Way) Kison. Mr. Kison was an oil operator for many years in this section of the country, and is now living retired
at Worthington. He was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and his wife was a native of Butler County, Pennsylvania. To Doctor and Mrs. Dunkle three children have been born : Robert, born June 30, 1913, a student in Butler High School ; Sarah, born April 9, 1915, a student; and J. M., Jr., born August 24, 1916, died August 29, 1923. Doctor Dunkle is a close and careful student in his calling and holds membership in the Butler County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, and American Medical Association. As a fraternalist he is a member of Phi Rho Sigma fraternity ; Victory Lodge, A. F. and A. M., No. 694, New Castle ; Consistory, thirty-second degree, New Castle ; Syria Temple, A. A. 0. N. M. S., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Syria Caravan, No. 14, A. A. 0. N. M. S., Butler.

In political matters Doctor Dunkle is a Republican, and while a resident of Worthington was a member of the City Council and served as its president for five years. He is a member of the Methodist Church, while Mrs. Dunkle belongs to the United Presbyterian Church.
