Samuel Walker stands as a splendid representative of the legal profession in Butler County and is among the most prominent citizens of Butler. He was born in this city, July 10, 1873, and is the son of Samuel and Caroline (Zimmerman) Walker.
Samuel Walker, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born at Tarentum, Pennsylvania, but spent the greater part of his life at Butler. During the Civil War he served with the rank of lieutenant and was promoted to captain before the close of the war. He suffered the loss of a leg while in the service and spent the remainder of his life as a retired army officer. Mr. Walker was connected with the First National Bank of Butler for several years and served as county tax collector for three years. He died July 4, 1896. His widow resides in Butler, where she was born. Mr. and Mrs. Walker had three children: Catherine, married Dr. R. B. Greer; Edwin Lyon, died at the age of five years; and Samuel, the subject of this sketch.
Samuel Walker attended the local schools and was graduated from Butler High School in 1893. He then attended Pennsylvania State College and the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania, being graduated from the latter institution in 1899. On July 18 of that year Mr. Walker became associated in practice with his uncle, Clarence Walker. Mr. Walker served as district attorney in 1905-06-07. He has offices in the Butler County National Bank Building. Mr. Walker's ability at the bar is evidenced by the large clientage accorded him. Mr. Walker in January, 1927, received the appointment as public service commissioner from Governor John S. Fisher. He was county solicitor for a term of four years and is a member of the Butler County Bar Association.
On October 21, 1914, Mr. Walker was united in marriage with Miss Stelle Campbell, of Pittsburgh, the daughter of James and Jane Campbell, both deceased. They have a daughter, Caroline Jane.
Mr. Walker is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge, Butler Country and Sterling Club. He has always been a Republican. Mr. Walker is held in high esteem as a lawyer and citizen.
During the time Mr. Walker attended the State College he played full back position on the football team and was captain of the baseball team, playing third base. He also played football on the University of Pennsylvania varsity team for two years.
