Carl G. Phillips, one of the well known and highly respected citizens of Butler, is a native Pennsylvanian. He was born at Leatherwood, Clarion County, April 13, 1884, and is a son of M. L. and Pearl (Fulton) Phillips, both natives of Clarion County.
M. L. Phillips was born April 13, 1860, and began life as a farmer. He studied pharmacy and for five years conducted a drug store at Leeper, Pennsylvania. He sold this business and is now living retired on his farm at Leatherwood, Pennsylvania. He is a Republican and a member of the Baptist Church. His wife, who was born December 15, 1862, is a member of the Presbyterian Church. To this union five children were born : Carl G., the subject of this sketch; Nellie, married R. F. Brown, a general merchant, Tampa, Florida ; Fred, a World War veteran, having served in France with the Third Division, U. S. Infantry, now an agriculturist, in Clarion County, Pennsylvania; James, a veteran of the World war, a contracting painter, Leatherwood, Pennsylvania ; and Leland, lives in Butler.
Carl G. Phillips attended the public school of Clarion County, Clarion Normal School, and Valparaiso University. After leaving college he was a teacher in the Clarion County schools for seven years. In 1910 he came to Butler as assistant general storekeeper for the Standard Steel Car Company, in which position he remained until 1920. In the latter year he was appointed tax collector for the
City of Butler and served for three years. In January, 1925, Mr. Phillips was appointed alderman for the Fifth Ward to fill an unexpired term, and in November, 1925, was elected to that office, and has performed his duties with a high degree of fidelity and efficiency.
In 1910 Mr. Phillips was married to Miss Bess Dixon, a daughter of W. O. and Nancy Dixon, natives of Clarion County, Pennsylvania. To this union four children were born: Helen, a student ; Nancy Pearl, deceased, buried in Leatherwood, Pennsylvania ; Romaine, a student, and Martha. Mrs. Phillips died in 1920 and is buried at Leatherwood, Pennsylvania. Mr. Phillips was married the second time in 1924 to Miss Frances Miller, a daughter of James Miller, of Clarion County. Mr. Miller is deceased. To Carl G. and Frances (Miller) Phillips one son has been born, James.
Mr. Phillips is a Republican and a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and Knights of Krassin, D. 0. 0. K.
