Anderson, John F.

John F. Anderson is a prominent business man and highly esteemed citizen of Butler, where he has spent practically his entire life. He was born at Mt. Chestnut, in Butler County, February 14, 1852, and is the son of James D. and Mary Ann (Martin) Anderson.

James D. Anderson, deceased, was a widely known citizen of Butler County. He was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1816, and in 1833 came to this country and settled at Prospect, Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1865. He then removed to Penn Township, Butler County, where he farmed until the time of his death, which occurred in January, 1899. Mr. Anderson was a school teacher in early life. He was elected county registrar of Butler County in 1876 and served in that capacity for three years. He was a lifelong Democrat. His wife, Mary Ann (Martin) Anderson, was a native of Butler County. She died in 1902. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, who were married in 1841, had the following children : Robert M., died in 1919; Kiziah, died in infancy ; John L., died in infancy; John F., the sub-4 ject of this sketch ; Elzie H., deceased ; Mary Ann, widow of William Seaman; Elizabeth Jane, deceased; Emma, deceased; William C., Butler County, Pennsylvania ; and Margaret Florence, wife of Charles Graham, resides in Butler.

John F. Anderson spent his boyhood at Prospect and attended the public schools at that place and also the district schools of Franklin Township. He was graduated from Witherspoon Institute, Butler, and for five years taught school in Butler and Allegheny Counties. He spent several years in Colorado in the coal business and in 1883 engaged in the mercantile business at Renfrew, Pennsylvania. Five years later Mr. Anderson removed to Butler, where he has since been identified with the Home Natural Gas Company and the Standard Plate Glass Company, being vice president of the latter named organization.
On June 25, 1883, Mr. Anderson was united in marriage with Miss Iona May Heap, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. They have two sons, Frank Carl and James Gardner.

In politics Mr. Anderson is identified with the Republican party and he is an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.
